Description
What opens up in this module:
Recorded music produces its effects through decisions most listeners never consciously register — harmonic tension, the spatial placement of instruments, the production choices that shape timbre and depth. This module develops the analytical listening that makes those decisions audible.
This module works through:
– Song and compositional form: the structural patterns across different genres and how form shapes the listener’s experience of development, expectation, and resolution
– Arrangement logic: how the choice and placement of instruments, density, and texture serve the emotional and structural needs of a piece
– Production as composition: how recording, mixing, and production decisions are creative choices with analytical significance rather than technical processes separate from the music
Estimated engagement: +/- 5 hours
What changes afterward:
A listening practice that engages with what a recording is doing analytically — producing richer experience and the critical vocabulary to communicate about music with precision and authority.
